The first match of the season for Solihull United 2nd team was a friendly match with BPCC 4th XI at our home ground in old Edwardians. It was a beautiful afternoon with sun shining bright and a perfect day to have your game where pitch bit dry than usual slow pitch. BPCC captain Ghulam Raza won the toss and decided to bat first on the track looking good for batsmen.
SUCC opening bowlers Raj and Sanjay bowled their opening batters with great line and length they were slashing the balls offered width and pace scoring few odd boundaries until Sanjay took 2 wickets in same over and Raj took wicket in next over where opener got holed by a great back peddling catch taken by Kunj at Mid off. BPCC were 42 for 3 in first 10 overs then next change of bowlers Rahul and Parth brought in as second change again they troubled their middle order with great pace and lengths. Parth took 2 wickets including a slower one got clean bowled a settled batsman and Jas took catch in slips of his second wicket. At 20 overs oppo scored 100 plus runs for 7 then off spinner Pratap was brought in who is turning a lot. Pratap who took a wicket by LBW and then Sid was bowling other end in tandem took last 2 wickets of tail enders. All bowlers shared wickets and decent performance at field apart from some extras and few drop catches but being first game of season we can improve by fielding practice.
Requiring 143 to chase SUCC regular openers Sanjiv and Jas opened batting as usual they both scored few boundaries in first 3 overs taking total to 21 for no loss. Sanjiv scored back to back straight 6 and 4 of their skipper Raza bowling and very next ball when keeper standing up Sanjiv missed a straight ball playing across got bowled. Vishal bowled other end with his canny left arm variations turning balls on both sides with some drift. He tool wicket of Jas LBW and Eshwar got bowled tried to play slog sweep. In a matter of 2 runs 3 wickets fallen putting huge pressure on us and oppo celebrating as if game was over until when Ram and Raj took the crease started building steady partnership taking quick singles, doubles and odd boundaries. They both chatting in between overs and planning to build partnership to take game till the end as new batters may struggle with used surface has some sponge pockets making low bounce and turn. Ram played an attacking innings whilst raj hung around him to build partnership. At 16 overs they both put score at 100 and then we decided one of us to attack bowlers. Ram attacked bad balls scoring 8 boundaries and 2 sixes so 35 more runs added in just 2 overs. Ram scored his 50 and he obliged to retire to give chance to other batters as it is friendly game when we require only 9 runs to win.
Parth came in to bat and then Raj tried to hit vishal over extra cover top edged getting holed at covers with a superb diving catch by the fielder. kunj joined at crease with Parth and Kunj hit a boundary between mid wicket and long on (left handers cow corner) to finish the game in style
Overall great show by the team and thanks to all helping with Frogbox, umpiring and manual scoring as app had some mess-up that I am updating score manually now. We will teach scoring online to few before our next game also keep Scorebook as backup to score traditional ways.
Big thank you to all and youngsters like Parth and Siddhant are good addition to the club
